A kitchen budget falls apart when it's built from one headline number. A better approach is to build it line by line, starting from sourced national ranges and then adding the costs that come up in Austin homes. The figures below come from HomeGuide's kitchen remodel cost guide (updated Dec. 31, 2025). They're national ranges, not Austin quotes, so use them to plan and to sanity-check bids.
Start with the scope tier
| Scope | What it usually means | Cost range (HomeGuide) |
|---|---|---|
| Partial refresh | Same layout; paint, hardware, some fixtures, maybe counters | $60–$150 per sq ft |
| Full remodel | New cabinets, counters, appliances, lighting; same layout | $15,000–$50,000, or $150–$250 per sq ft |
| Large or high-end | Layout changes, custom cabinets, premium appliances | $50,000–$70,000+, or $250–$350 per sq ft |
Moving plumbing, gas or walls is what pushes most projects up a tier. If you can keep the sink, range and refrigerator where they are, you avoid much of the cost.
Line items to price
Cabinets are usually the largest single line.
| Option | Cost range (HomeGuide) |
|---|---|
| Full cabinet replacement | $4,500–$15,000 (stock to semi-custom; high-end custom can exceed $36,000) |
| Cabinet refacing | $5,000–$13,000 for a 100–200 sq ft kitchen |
| Refinishing with new doors and drawer fronts | $1,500–$4,500 |
| Painting | $900–$3,800 |
Counters and backsplash
- Countertop replacement: $1,500 to $6,000 for an average kitchen.
- Backsplash: $500 to $1,700, or $10 to $50 per square foot.
Appliances: a matching four-piece package costs $2,500 to $6,800 installed.
Lighting and electrical
- Six recessed lights: $700 to $1,650.
- A new GFCI outlet: $150 to $350.
- Electricians charge $50 to $130 per hour.
Flooring: $300 to $3,000 for the kitchen floor alone.
Demolition: $500 to $2,500 for a full gut.
Austin-specific adds
Permits. In Austin, moving or adding plumbing, electrical circuits, gas lines or walls generally requires permits through Development Services, with trade permits pulled by licensed contractors. Budget permit fees and allow time for inspections. Suburban cities have their own fee schedules.
Electrical service upgrades. Many older Central and East Austin homes have small panels. Adding an induction range, more circuits and an EV charger together can trigger a panel or service upgrade. Get a TDLR-licensed electrician to assess the panel before you pick appliances.
Older-home surprises. In pre-1978 homes, plan for lead-safe practices (the EPA RRP rule), possible asbestos testing of old flooring, and galvanized or cast-iron plumbing behind the walls. See our older-home remodeling guide.
Pier-and-beam floors. Stone counters, islands and tile add weight. In older pier-and-beam homes, have the floor system assessed, and budget for added supports if needed.
Ventilation. A ducted range hood vented outdoors is a building code consideration for higher-output ranges, and much more effective than recirculating hoods. Exterior ducting through a brick or stone wall adds cost.

Ways to save without regret
- Keep the layout and spend on cabinets and counters instead.
- Choose semi-custom cabinets with good boxes and drawer hardware.
- Use a quartz remnant for an island, or a less expensive material for perimeter counters.
- Buy appliances during holiday sales and have them delivered before installation starts.
- Reface solid existing cabinets instead of replacing them.
Timing
Typical sequence: design and selections (several weeks), permitting if needed, demolition, rough-in and inspections, drywall, cabinets, counter templating and install (counters often take one to two weeks after templating), backsplash, fixtures and final inspection. Order long-lead items like cabinets and appliances early.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Austin?
HomeGuide's national ranges put a full remodel at $15,000 to $50,000 ($150 to $250 per square foot), and large or high-end projects at $50,000 to $70,000+. Austin quotes vary with scope, home age and finishes. Get several itemized bids.
Do I need a permit to remodel my kitchen in Austin?
Cosmetic work like cabinets, counters and paint generally doesn't need one. Moving plumbing, adding circuits, gas work and wall changes generally do.
How much contingency should I plan?
Plan 10% for newer homes and 15 to 20% for pre-war homes, where hidden plumbing, wiring and floor issues are more common.
