When an Austin-area roof needs replacing, two upgrades come up more than any others: impact-resistant (Class 4) asphalt shingles and standing-seam metal. Both handle Texas weather better than standard shingles, in different ways. Here's how they compare on the factors that matter here.
Quick comparison
| Factor | Class 4 asphalt shingles | Standing-seam metal |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Moderate. Above standard shingles | Higher. HomeGuide lists metal at $5–$16 per sq ft installed, with standing seam at the upper end |
| Hail | Rated under UL 2218 to resist impact cracking. Can still bruise in large hail | Resists punctures. Large hail can leave cosmetic dents |
| Heat | Dark colors absorb heat. "Cool" colors are available | Reflective finishes reduce attic heat |
| Fire (WUI) | Many achieve Class A as an assembly | Class A as an assembly is common |
| Lifespan | Comparable to quality architectural shingles. Depends on ventilation | Long service life |
| Solar | Penetrating mounts need careful flashing | Clamp-on mounts without penetrations |
| Repairs | Easy to patch | Panel repairs need specialized crews |
| HOA acceptance | Usually high | Varies. Some HOAs restrict metal |
Hail: what "Class 4" means
Class 4 is the highest rating under the UL 2218 impact test, which drops steel balls of increasing size onto shingle samples. Class 4 shingles survive the largest test ball without cracking. That doesn't make them hail-proof. Very large hail can still damage them, and granule loss and bruising can occur. Still, they fare better than standard shingles, and many Texas insurers offer premium discounts for qualifying impact-resistant roofs. Ask your insurer which products and documentation qualify before you buy.
Metal and hail: dents vs. leaks
Standing-seam panels rarely leak from hail, but they can dent. Read two things before you buy:
- The metal warranty, especially the finish and cosmetic damage terms.
- Your insurance policy. Some policies limit coverage for cosmetic-only damage to metal roofs. Ask your agent.
Heavier-gauge panels and textured finishes show dents less.
Heat and energy
A roof's color and finish affect attic temperatures. Light-colored and reflective metal finishes reduce heat gain, and some shingle lines offer "cool" granules. For either material, ventilation is what keeps the attic from cooking: balanced soffit intake and ridge exhaust. See our roofing guide.
Wildfire areas
In Austin's Wildland-Urban Interface, roofs must be Class A fire-rated when 50% or more is replaced. Both materials can meet that as tested assemblies. Ask the roofer for the specific assembly rating. Metal's noncombustible surface is one reason it's popular in Bastrop, Dripping Springs and west Austin.
HOAs and Texas law
Texas Property Code Chapter 202 limits an HOA's ability to prohibit certain roofing, including shingles designed to resist wind and hail or to be more energy efficient, provided they resemble the materials otherwise allowed. Associations can still regulate color and appearance. For metal roofs, HOA rules vary more, so submit the product for approval first.
Which should you choose?
Choose Class 4 shingles if:
- your HOA requires a shingle look;
- budget is the main constraint;
- you want an insurance discount without a big upfront jump.
Choose standing-seam metal if:
- you plan to stay long-term;
- you're in a WUI or wooded, fire-prone area;
- you plan to add solar;
- your HOA permits it.
Questions to ask roofers
- What exact product line, and what impact and fire ratings?
- What underlayment and ventilation plan?
- For metal: what gauge, panel profile, finish and clip system?
- Who registers the manufacturer's warranty?
- What's your workmanship warranty?
Questions to ask contractors
- What exact product and impact rating are you quoting? Get the manufacturer's model name in the contract.
- Is underlayment synthetic? Will ice-and-water membrane be used in valleys and penetrations?
- How will the ridge, valleys and wall transitions be flashed? Will drip edge be replaced?
- For metal roofing: what gauge and panel profile, and is it painted with a PVDF-type finish?
- What documentation will you provide for an insurance discount?
Frequently asked questions
Are Class 4 shingles hail-proof?
No. They resist cracking in impact testing better than standard shingles, but large hail can still damage them.
Can an HOA ban impact-resistant shingles?
Texas Property Code Chapter 202 limits HOAs' ability to prohibit certain impact-resistant roofing, though HOAs can regulate appearance.
Does a metal roof get dented by hail?
Large hail can dent metal panels cosmetically. Check the warranty and your insurance coverage for cosmetic damage.
